Paro is the gateway for most visitors and the starting point for the hike to Taktsang Monastery, better known as Tiger’s Nest. Built dramatically into a cliff above the valley, it is one of Bhutan’s most recognizable and rewarding cultural sites.
From Paro, the journey toward Punakha crosses high mountain passes and opens onto lush valleys. Punakha Dzong is one of the country’s most impressive monastery-fortresses, set at the meeting point of two rivers.
Biking can be a memorable way to experience sections of the journey, while hiking opens access to quieter valleys and rural communities.
Thimphu offers a contrast to the mountain landscapes, with markets, artisans, temples and an introduction to Bhutan’s evolving capital. Together, Paro, Punakha and Thimphu provide an excellent foundation for understanding the country before adding a longer trek into the Himalayas.
