Mt Kenya: the mountain less traveled

Why Mt Kenya deserves a place beside Kilimanjaro for trekkers and mountaineers seeking a quieter East African mountain.

Mt Kenya is often overlooked by travelers focused on climbing Kilimanjaro, but it is one of East Africa’s most rewarding mountain experiences. The trails are quieter, the scenery is exceptionally varied, and the mountain offers challenges for both trekkers and technical climbers.

The walking summit of Point Lenana is achievable for experienced hikers, while Batian and Nelion require technical climbing skills. Between the summits, trekkers encounter alpine valleys, lake tarns, dramatic rock formations and wide views across the Kenyan highlands.

Private camping can make the experience more comfortable while also allowing greater flexibility than relying entirely on basic mountain huts. Responsible porter loads and strong local support remain central to how we approach these expeditions.

Mt Kenya can also combine beautifully with a safari. Samburu is within easy reach after the trek, and travelers can continue on to other wildlife areas such as the Masai Mara for a broader Kenya adventure.
